LIGHT ON App

UNICRI will soon launch a smartphone APP to promote public awareness on discrimination and racist hate speech. In cooperation with the Italian Office Against Discrimination UNICRI will also pilot a reporting function of hate crime incidents.

A new memorandum of understanding has been signed by the Italian Office Against Discrimination (UNAR – Ufficio Nazionale Antidiscriminazioni Razziali) and the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), in the framework of the project LIGHT ON.

UNAR has been actively involved in the project LIGHT ON, in particular for the development of an application for smart phones that will support the existing UNAR Contact Center in receiving reports on hate crime and discrimination acts.

Thanks to the LIGHT ON App both victims and witnesses of hate crime should be able to report hate incidents, physical or online, to UNAR, through their mobile devices.

A test of the App will be launched by UNAR and UNICRI in the next months and the first results will be officially presented during the final conference of the project LIGHT ON to be held in L’Aquila on 27 November 2014.
